Steel Rule Die Cutting Presses

The steel rule die process involves designing a die-line in CAD software, cutting the pattern into a wood base using a CNC router, bending steel rule to match the pattern, and inserting it into the base. The finished die is mounted on a die-cutting press, which applies pressure to cut, score, or perforate sheets of material in a single pass.

Making a steel rule die starts with a CAD-designed die-line file that maps out cuts, scores, and perforations. A CNC router cuts corresponding channels into a plywood or MDF base. Steel rule is then precisely bent using an automatic rule-bending machine and inserted into the channels, creating a custom cutting tool ready for mounting on a press.

Steel rule typically ranges from 0.008" to 0.140" thick depending on the material being cut and the level of detail required. Thinner rule suits intricate patterns and lighter materials like paper or labels, while thicker rule provides durability for heavier substrates such as corrugated board or plastic composites.

Steel rule die-cutting presses can process a wide range of substrates from .002 to .080 in thickness, including text and cover weight paper, chipboard, corrugated material, plastic composites, magnetic material, and kiss-cut sticker stock, making them versatile for packaging, labels, and promotional materials.

Lead times vary by die complexity, but standard steel rule dies can typically be constructed in-house within a few days using CAD software and CNC router technology. Foil stamping dies often ship in 2–3 days, while embossing dies typically require about 3 days from file approval to completion.

Steel rule dies use bent steel blades set into a wood base and are ideal for short-to-medium production runs with frequent design changes, offering lower tooling costs. Rotary dies are cylindrical and better suited for high-volume, continuous runs, but require more expensive tooling and longer lead times to produce.
