Paper Cutting Dies

For production runs, a steel rule die used with an automatic die-cutting press delivers the most accurate, repeatable results across large volumes of paperboard, chipboard, or corrugated material. Steel rule dies are custom-built using CAD design and CNC-routed die boards, allowing precise scoring, perforation, and kiss-cutting that manual tools like blades or scissors cannot match at scale.

Small-scale die cutting can be done manually with a hand press or craft die-cutting machine for hobby projects, but commercial packaging and carton production require an automatic die-cutting press paired with a custom steel rule die. Machine-based die cutting ensures consistent depth, alignment, and cut quality across thousands of sheets, which manual methods cannot reliably reproduce.

In manufacturing, cutting paper or paperboard into custom shapes using a shaped cutting tool is called die cutting. When the die also creates fold lines, it's referred to as scoring, and cutting partway through a material without cutting the backing is called kiss-cutting, commonly used for labels and stickers.

Steel rule dies can cut a wide range of substrates including text and cover weight paper, chipboard, corrugated board, plastic composites, magnetic material, and kiss-cut sticker stock. Material thickness typically ranges from .002 to .080 inches (2-point to 80-point), depending on the die design and press capabilities.

Lead times vary by die complexity. Standard embossing dies typically take about 3 days, while foil stamp dies can be ready in 2-3 days. Steel rule cutting dies are usually built in-house using CAD software and CNC routers, allowing for faster turnaround and on-the-fly adjustments compared to outsourced die construction.

Most die construction workflows require die-line files in EPS format, which can be imported directly into die-design software to speed up production. Some manufacturers also accept laser proofs, mockups, or press sheets as reference. Formats like PDF, JPEG, TIFF, or native AI files are often not directly compatible and may need conversion first.
